One of my wild animal studies has gone into print this week as a gorgeous hardback journal, a majestic lion. The lion came from a fascination with the patterning around their eyes, the weight of expression in such a still face. Some pieces seem to ask for a darker beginning. This little Black Terrier is one of them. With dark fur, the light has to be found carefully — in the eyes, the soft edges of the face, the warmth in the coat, and the small places where the character begins to come through. I don’t always start on white paper. With pastel, darker tones change how the colours arrive. They don’t sit in the same way. They glow differently, and the light feels as though it has to be discovered rather than simply added. There’s a particular kind of light you can only get by starting in the dark. The horse feels that tension before we have even named it. A deeper, steadier breath changes the whole picture. The seat begins to soften. The hands lighten. The aids become clearer.
