Some pieces seem to ask for a darker beginning. This little Black Terrier is one of them. With dark fur, the light has to be found carefully — in the eyes, the soft edges of the face, the warmth in the coat, and the small places where the character begins to come through. I don’t always start on white paper. With pastel, darker tones change how the colours arrive. They don’t sit in the same way. They glow differently, and the light feels as though it has to be discovered rather than simply added. There’s a particular kind of light you can only get by starting in the dark. When a horse spooks, I look first at what the Rider is giving the horse. Very often, the horse is feeling unsafe, uncertain, or unclear. The Rider may be holding tension, breathing shallowly, losing the rhythm, or riding without a clear enough plan. The work begins with the Rider. Keep your weight down. Breathe properly. Keep your eyes up. Hold a steady rhythm. Stay clear and calm. Change what the horse feels from you, and the spooking often begins to change too. Good contact is a conversation. It should feel elastic, responsive and two-way, with the horse able to trust the hand as something steady and fair. If there is resistance, the answer is rarely to take a stronger hold. Look first at the seat, the hands, the breathing, and whether the aids are truly clear. The goal is connection, not control. There are two phases in a Rider’s training calendar: preparation and competition. Preparation is where we ask questions, experiment, practise and make adjustments. Competition is where we trust the work, ride the plan, and believe in the partnership underneath us. Compete in preparation mode and you can overthink every stride. Try to prepare in competition mode and the learning may not settle. The skill is knowing which phase you are in, and giving it the right mindset. Eventing asks the Rider to manage fear, recover from mistakes, and keep improving. The Riders I see make the biggest progress are not always the ones who find it easiest. They are the ones who build a mental toolkit. They learn how to breathe, make a plan, use nerves positively, and come back to the job in front of them. That matters in every phase, from dressage to show jumping to cross-country. We practise the management of the Rider’s mind as much as the training of the horse, because the two are never separate. The hardest thing I teach is self-belief. Not the loud kind. The quiet kind that helps a Rider trust their eye, trust their seat, and trust the partnership. So often, Riders are more capable than they believe, but the story they have been telling themselves starts to become the way they ride. Rhythm. Suppleness. Contact. Impulsion. Straightness. Collection. The Scales of Training are not a checklist to tick off. They are a sequence, and each part builds on the one before it. Miss the rhythm, and suppleness will not come easily. Miss the suppleness, and contact can become resistance rather than communication. Forty-five years on, this is still the part of coaching I love most: watching partnerships develop. The shift from tense to settled. From doubt to belief. From correct to beautiful. The Riders who make that shift are not always the most experienced. They are the ones willing to notice their patterns, do the mental work, and practise the habits they want to keep. PRACTICE MAKES PERMANENT. The technical improvements matter, but confidence, clarity and belief are often what allow them to stay. Most lessons in my world end with three positives. Not three corrections. Three positives. Not because we avoid the work, but because confident riding is built by noticing what is already going right. A clearer aid, a better breath, a softer hand, a braver decision, a moment where the partnership felt more connected. My story begins at Talland. Synonymous with the Sivewright name. I grew up surrounded by horses, family, teaching and classical horsemanship. By 21, I had represented Great Britain twice at the Junior European Eventing Championships, both gold medal teams, competed at Burghley, and gained my BHSI Stage 5.
